February 2011, Sinaloa experienced severe frost that caused significant damage, affecting over 50% of the total planted production of tomatoes, cucumbers and squash, as well as one-third of the production of tomatillos and chili peppers. This led to a 100% increase in tomato prices in Sinaloa and significant price increases in other cities. The frost also had a significant impact on vegetable prices in the US, where it was reported that tomato prices increased by 300% compared to last year's prices.
